Idli, ice cream competition in Coimbatore

          Coimbatore: An idli and ice-cream eating competition was held here recently . The time given for each food enthusiast was five minutes. Organised by the Siruthali, a voluntary organisation, the competition was also used to promote the need to restore water bodies in the State. Over 500 idlis, 20 buckets of sambhar (a south Indian lentil delicacy) and nearly 500 ice cream cups and sticks were consumed during the competition. A large number of people turned up for the fun-filled occasion. Abbas, the winner of the idli eating competition, couldn't believe his achievement of having eaten 30 idlis. "I had thought of eating only four to five idlis, but my friends encouraged me to eat more. By the time the organisers and referees indicated "Stop", I realised I had eaten 30 idlis", he said. Every participant was provided with water to facilitate the smooth passage of the food down their respective food pipes. The ice-cream eating competition was won by Sandhya, who down eight of them. She said that she was driven to participate on watching the other participants.
