PETA protests against KFC in Chennai
Chennai:
Activists of the People for Ethical Treatment
of Animals (PETA) staged a demonstration here today
against the opening of a new KFC branch. The demonstrators
gathered at Radha Krishnan Road and shouted slogans
against slaughter of poultry as mark of their protest.
"We are having demonstration all over the world in
front of KFC by all the PETA branches, wherever we
are located. The reason is KFC slaughter the most
number of chickens. They slaughter 850 million chickens
per year and they are doing it in a horrible and brutal
way. PETA has done undercover investigation on all
KFC suppliers all over the world and they have found
that hundreds and thousands of chickens are craned
in dark windless shades. They have no place to turn
away. They do not see even their lives," said Roshni
D'silva, Campaign Co-ordinator, PETA. However, the
KFC defended itself saying chickens are outsourced
from the reputed food suppliers, where all the standard
poultry measures are taken care off. "First of all,
KFC does not either grow poultry or process poultry
or transport poultry. We are chicken restaurant. Our
jobs start with kitchen. We make chicken products.
Form the point of buying chickens, we buy it from
India's most reputed chicken suppliers and they have
adequate checking measures in place to make sure to
the things right. In fact, they are India's largest
exporter of food products outside the country. So,
we buy the chickens from the best suppliers in the
country," said Unnat Verma, Marketing Manager, KFC.
"We also have our own checks and balance measures
in place to make sure that every thing is right. Audits
happen for every supply to ensure the product we are
getting is absolutely right," he added. PETA alleged
that chicken suppliers of KFC breed chickens with
such a large number that many become crippled from
the weight of their massive upper bodies. PETA's study
claims that in the slaughterhouses, throats of the
poultry are slit while they are still conscious and
many are scalded to death in de-feathering tanks.
