90 kg poppy seeds seized in Jammu

Jammu: At least 90 kilograms of poppy seeds were seized on the Narval check-post near here on Thursday, police officials said today. The State police seized the drug from a truck loaded with apples after getting a tip-off and arrested three persons in this connection. Seikh Rehman, Superintendent of Police, south Jammu, said that investigations were still on and a few more people might be arrested. "We worked on a tip off from one of our sources. We seized around 90 kilograms of bookie (poppy seeds) and a case has been registered under sec 15 of the drugs act. The investigation is still on and we hope to arrest a few more people," said Rehman. Police estimated the price of the seized drugs at more than Rs five lakhs. Poppy seeds are offending ingredients because some varieties contain traces of morphine. Opium is mainly cultivated in India in the higher reaches of Himalayas in few northern pockets but is now largely state-regulated or illegal cultivation is mostly destroyed. India is considered a major conduit of opium smuggling cultivated in the Golden Triangle comprising Southeast Asian countries Myanmar, Laos and Thailand and the Golden Crescent which groups Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran.
