Rudrapur
(Uttaranchal): Uttaranchal police on Friday arrested a poacher and
recovered five leopard skins, worth more than 34,000 dollars in the international
market, when they were being allegedly carried to Delhi to sell them in
Bareli. "On the information given by the Special Operation Group, we arrested
a man while his associate managed to escape. We have recovered five leopard
skins from the accused which cost around 15-20 lakhs of rupees in the
international market," said Amit Kumar Sinha, senior superintendent of
police, Udhamsingh Nagar. Akbar Ali, the accused, said he was to hand
them over to a contact in New Delhi. "I got them from Haldwani and they
were to be sold in Bareli. While one of my companion escaped, I was caught.
These five skins were to be handed over in Delhi. I have poached animal
skins earlier too." This seizure of the skins comes in the wake of the
Government of India taking a serios note of poaching and attempting to
prevent it, in the wake of recent incidents of vanishing of the Tigers
from sanctuaries. The poaching of wild animals is illegal in India, and
this menace is blamed for the drastic tiger population drop. The trading
of skins can fetch up to rupees 10 million in the international market.
