Kashipur:
The police seized over 100 live missiles in a series of raids
at a steel factory in Kashipur, a small town in Uttaranchal on Sunday.
This is one of the biggest such seizures since live missiles mistaken
as scrap ripped through a steel plant on the outskirts of New Delhi
killing 10 people in September last year. The factory, sitting amidst
a bustling commercial centre in the town, had been sealed for further
investigations and officials are trying to link incident with the
series of similar seizures in northern and northwestern India. Umaid
Singh, senior sub-inspector of police said, that a search was on in
the sprawling unit. "We have recovered around 34 to 35 small missiles.
Earlier team had also unearthed missiles and they are going to dispose
them," said Singh. Initial reports said the factory could have imported
the explosives from a West Asian country. Police have cracked down
on steel factories across the country since the scrap explosion in
September and made several seizures of mortar shells, ammunition and
rockets many of them live explosives, from scrap imports. India has
banned scrap imports from war zones in the wake of the accidental
blast and said, that it would allow scrap imports only in shredded
form.
