Picking
your porn, no great shakes in Delhi New Delhi: "It is as easy to get a porn CD in Delhi as getting a packet of Maggi. You can get one even at 12'o clock in the night," was what Mukesh, a resident of Ber Sarai, said when asked about the availability of porn CDs in his area. With the DPS R K Puram MMS case hogging the newspaper headlines these days, the issue of pornography has once again come to the fore. The police is actively looking into the matter and everybody else is out to condemn. But this hasn't stopped Delhi's markets and by-lanes from catering for the porn lovers in the Indian capital. Getting a porn CD in the city is virtually child's play, as every nook and corner of the city sells it. It is worthwhile to note here that the sale, distribution, circulation etc of 'obscene' materials is banned under Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code, but still they are in the market and selling like hot cakes. Palika Bazaar and Nehru Place market, both situated in the heart of the city, are hotspots for porn lovers. Though this is a known fact, nothing much has come about from banning the sale of such stuff. One can get the latest and most explicit pieces of pornography here, that too at dirt-cheap rates. The market boasts of English CDs as well as Hindi CDs (not common at other places). From the DPS MMS scandal clip to the Miss Jammu CD, you have a wide variety to choose from. The pick is yours. But the authorities choose to overlook other areas vulnerable to the problem. Small pockets of the city, mostly those having a huge population of students, have a number of these shops doing brisk business. There are numerous shops selling and renting out porn stuff in areas like Mukherjee Nager, Parmanad colony, Ber Sarai, Katwaria Sarai, Malviya Nager, to name a few. All these areas have two things in common-the availability of porn CDs and secondly the presence of large number of students. While some of these areas are near the Delhi University, others are closer to JNU, IIT and a few MBA institutes. There are a lot of shops, which are there to facilitate your access to these CDs. One can rent a VCD player, along with two or three porn CDs for a bare 150-200 bucks. Most of the students are reluctant to talk about the issue on record, although they admit that they are avid watchers of pornography. "We watch porn films at regular intervals, it is quite easy to get one. It hardly costs us Rs. 200 to Rs. 250 to get some movies along with a VCD player and a TV set", says a Delhi University student, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The story is not different for students elsewhere. Porn is on the
boom. Shopkeepers also admit that 90 per cent of their customers are
either students or young adults. "Most of our customers are in the
age of 15 to 25 years, and they watch these films regularly. They
are ready to pay good amounts if we provide them with the rare stuff,"
said Naresh (name changed on request), a CD shopkeeper of Mukherjee
Nagar. Normal CDs go on rent for something between Rs 20 to Rs 40,
while the rare ones do go for as high as Rs 60 to Rs 80 per 6 hours.
Video CDs like the DPS MMS case and the 'Miss Jammu' CDs are stars
of the market. They are rented for as high as Rs 100 to Rs 150. "There
is a huge demand for 'special' CDs. Before the news and the clips
of the 'Miss Jammu' CD was not played on the news channels, it was
like any other porn CD, but once it was in the news, we made big bucks
from the same old CD", said the shopkeeper. An MBA student, who is
also from a very affluent family, admits that most of the guys are
used to watching porn CDs and also justifies it. "There is nothing
wrong in it as far as it is not taken very seriously. It's true that
we should not let it affect our character or personality," says he.
It seems that the DPS MMS scandal is just the tip of the iceberg.
The police are to be blamed partially. It raids and bans the sale
only in those vicinities known to everyone. But what about the other
pockets which are also party to the same vice? Patna police recover fake medicine wrappers (Go to Top) Patna:
Police in Patna raided an offset printing press near the city
and have reportedly recovered fake medicine wrappers, spurious medicines
and injections worth lakhs of rupees. On the basis of information
received at the Kadamkuan police station, an offset printing press
in the Machuahtoli area was raided. "There are many companies which
are out of Bihar but get their wrappers and labels printed here. When
we raided this place we come to know that the company which has given
the orders for printing of wrappers had been raided in which a lot
of medicines were seized",said Rakesh Dubey, City DSP, Patna. With
these kinds of raids conducted by the police it can be said that business
of fake medicines is flourishing in the state.
