Sundergarh District Police today arrested Gananath Dehuri for sacrificing Suresh Dehuri in the hope of pleasing the Goddess Durga to end his financial woes. The incident in Sargigarh came to light just three days after a young girl was rescued from a similar situation. Gananath, 30, who is a distant relative of the deceased, picked up the child on Sunday when the villagers were busy performing the Ramayana ballet. The little boy was stripped, his ring finger was chopped and his eyes taken out before he was killed. Gananath has confessed to the crime and has handed over the knife that he used for the murder. Shocked villagers blamed sheer illiteracy for the crime. "This has happened due to illiteracy and superstition. If it is removed everything will be solved. People still believe in all these superstition," said Laxmi Hary, a villager. Bhabagrahi Dehuri, the victim's father, who was anxiously searching for his son, fainted when he saw the mutilated body of his son. "His mother and everyone in the family searched for him. When I went to his school I saw a crowd gathered and I thought he had come back. But, when I saw him, I fainted," cried Bhabagrahi. Sundergarh SSP YK Jethwa said that a campaign would be organised in the villages to educate the people about the ill effects of superstition. "Investigation is going on, post-mortem is being conducted and people involved in the crime have been examined. The accused has been arrested and produced in the court.
