Virgin
Has the Longest Plane
NEW
DELHI: Virgin Atlantic
is adding the longest-ever plane to its fleet. Named
Claudia Nine, the Airbus A340-600 will start operations
immediately. By year-end, it will have four such
planes. These will be put into service on routes
to India, China, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong and
Johannesburg from London.
Meanwhile , negotiations are going on with Air India
to increase Virgin flights to India as, according
to Vrgin's boss Richard Branson, the present two
flights a week from London to India is only a losing
operation. Though Branson wants five flights a week,
he admits that at least a third one can turn the
operations economical.

Jet
Airways to Acquire Bigger Boeing Aircraft
(Go
To Top)
NEW
DELHI: The country's
second largest airliner, Jet Airways has decided
to upgrade the purchase of Boeing 737-800 aircraft
to a bigger version of 737-900, it has been announced.
Airline officials said the final deal is expected
to be signed at the ongoing Farnborough airshow
in the UK for acquiring the 170-seater aircraft,
which has 16 seats more than the Boeing 737-800.
This comes close on the heels of the company's decision
to buy 10 Brazilian Embraer-175 jets. Likely to
be acquired in May next year, the Boeing 737-900
aircraft would make it the only carrier in Asia
after Korean Air to operate this modern aircraft
manufactured by the US aviation giant.
Boeing officials said a 737-900 aircraft is to cost
about five million dollars more than a 737-800 aircraft
depending on the individual configurations of an
airline.While a Boeing 737-800 aircraft costs 57.5-64.5
million US dollars, Boeing 737-900 has a price tag
of 60.5-68.5 million US dollars.
At present Jet Airways has a fleet of 38 aircraft,
including 30 Boeing 737-400, 737-700 and 737-800
and eight ATR 72-500 planes. It operates about 245
daily flights to 41 destinations across the country.
