Boeing
to invest $100 m on Nagpur plant
Nagpur:
American Counsel to India Michael Owen has officially announced that
aircraft manufacturer, Boeing has plans to invest 100 million dollars
for building a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) unit in Nagpur,
Maharashtra. While talking to reporters here, Owen said: "The initial
plan for Boeing is to invest around 100 million dollar. It could go up
substantially depending upon the company involved". Nagpur has good infrastructure
facility, the diplomat said, adding this was a factor considered by the
Boeing management. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up
of the MRO unit - Boeing's first project in India - was signed last month
by Boeing vice president Dinesh Keskar and Maharashtra Chief Minister
Vilasrao Deshmukh. The MRO unit to be spread over a 60 acre area is likely
to be operational in the coming 18 months and would serve the maintenance
requirements of all Boeing aircraft present in the country. The setting
up of the MRO unit is part of the aircarft manufacturer's commitment to
invest 185 mn dollar in MRO and training institutes in the country after
it signed a historic Rs 45,000 crore deal for supplying 68 aircraft to
the country's national carrier Air-India. The government has allotted
land adjoining the international airport at Nagpur for the unit. The aircraft
manufacturer will also be committing 85 mn dollars for setting up a flight
training school and grant to training institutes.
