More airports to come up in various cities New
Delhi: Minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel in the Rajya Sabha
today announced about the Government's initiatives during the past one
year to open up more airports in various cities of the country. The initiatives
include the proposals for development of Greenfield airports at Hassan,
Gulbarga and Gangtok. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has taken initiatives
for the operationalisation of the airports at Cooch Behar, Pant Nagar,
Akola, Gondia, Surat and Mysore keeping in mind the demand of the airlines.
The base work has already begun with the strengthening and extension of
runway coupled with other allied works at Cooch Behar Airport. The work
is likely to be completed by the end of the year 2006. For the development
of Mysore, Pant Nagar, Surat and Akola airports, the respective State
Governments have been requested to provide the required number of additional
land free of cost and without any hindrances. The work is expected to
commence during 2006-07 after the availability of required additional
land. The Gondia air strip is also being developed for establishment of
a National Flying Institute.
