Security for Amarnath Yatra reviewed

Jammu: The security situation in Jammu region has been reviewed to ensure safety during the Amarnath Yatra in a Core Group meeting chaired by the GOC 16 Corps and Security Advisor, Lieutenant General RK Swamy. The Security Advisor asked the security agencies to be more vigilant in view of the volatile situation across the border and the possibility of terrorists attempting to disrupt the existing peace in the region. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has beefed up security to ensure an unhindered journey for the pilgrims. Anti-IED devices, security gadgets and sniffer dogs have also been put in at various sensitive places to counter any untoward incident. This year over 1.55 lakh people have registered themselves till now for the Yatra, which begins from June 15. According to data available, 52,700 people have registered themselves for the pilgrimage from the Delhi zone itself, while 31,400 pilgrims are from the Mumbai zone and 2,700 from the South zone. The pilgrimage was to begin from June 7, but was postponed to June 15 due to the heavy snowfall enroute the holy shrine. Every year a large number of devotees trek the steep, slippery 48-km route to reach the Amarnath cave shrine, which stands at a height of nearly 12,500 feet above sea level.
