Amarnath Yatra to commence on June 7

Srinagar: The annual two-month pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high holy cave shrine of Amarnath will commence on June 7. The yatra will conclude on August 5, Raksha Bandhan. Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra, who is the chairman of the Amarnath Shrine Board, took a decision in this regard after consulting various quarters and personally undertaking extensive aerial and on-ground surveys along both the tracks to the Holy Cave, from Baltal and Pahalgam, in the last two weeks. The SASB, in its 16th board meeting held in New Delhi on February 2 had authorised Vohra to decide the Yatra schedule, the spokesman said. He said registration for this year's Yatra, on both the routes-- Pahalgam and Baltal-- will commence from May 20 in 110 designated branches of Jammu and Kashmir Bank. While no registration of pilgrims from the Pahalgam route will be allowed beyond August 2, the registration in respect of the Baltal route will close on August 4.
