Thousands participate in Manipur marathon

Imphal: Manipur played host to the third open marathon on Sunday, which saw a record participation of people from all walks of life. The marathon was hosted with an aim to promote good health and boost the spirit of sportive participation among the people. The 21-kilometre-long run was flagged off in two categories; one was for the veterans while the other was open for all ages. Around 3000 participants turned out for marathon, with 16 participants from the Meghalaya and another 8 from the Assam . The unique marathon was organised by the Athletic Association and the United People’s Front (UPF). United People’s Front President Dhiren Singh said that running in events was important to lead a healthy and vibrant life. “In this changing time, we feel that there is a necessity to form a community to lead a healthy and vibrant life. With that aim to form a healthy community we have organised this mega marathon,” Dhiren Singh said. Women have also participated very enthusiastically in the marathon. One of the participants said that such participation would boost the spirit of the young people. “I want to mix up with the people. I feel that if we elderly and aged people take part, then more young girls and boys would be encouraged. We want them to give the zeal to participate in such marathon,” said G. Ibempishak Devi, a woman participant.
