Flower show in Dehradun
by Ashish Goel

Dehradun: Flower lovers thronged an annual show in Dehradun recently. The exhibition titled "Colours of Spring" was held in the premises of the Governor's residence. The state's horticulture department organised the event to encourage flower exhibitors to showcase their talent and also spread awareness among the people. Around 250 varieties of flowers were exhibited in various categories of cut and potted flowers. A number of visitors said they were awestruck by the large variety of flowers showcased at the exhibition. "It is a very nice and beautiful flower exhibition. Flowers of different hues and colours, nearly 100 to 150, are being shown here. All of the flowers grown in Uttarakhand are mostly covered," said Monocha, a visitor, G.S. Pandey, additional secretary of the state's horticulture department said, they had the geographical advantage of being close to New Delhi. "Since Uttarakhand is geographically near to the national and international flower market in Delhi, we have the advantage of reaching the market earlier in comparison to other places," said Pandey. The event also hosted a photo exhibition on the "Valley of Flowers", bouquet competition for women, puppet show and cultural programmes for children. Exquisite varieties of flowers like carnation, lily, chrysanthemum, gladiolus, gerbera and Indian red roses that are in high demand in domestic as well as in European markets are produced in the state. India is a small player in the 40 billion dollar global cut flower industry, dominated by Holland, France, Italy, South Africa and Thailand.
