Global swine flu death toll now over 700, says WHO

London: H1N1 swine flu has claimed lives of more than 700 people across the globe since it broke out four months ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said. WHO recorded a jump of at least two-thirds from the last official death toll with Margaret Chan, WHO director-general, warning that the disease would go on to become the biggest flu pandemic ever seen. Officials further said there was no point in documenting every case since the outbreak is developing at such a rapid pace, reports The BBC. WHO spokeswoman Aphaluck Bhatiasevi stressed on the urgent need to for countries to take proper precautions, including temporary closing down of schools. Experts predict a swell of new cases could be expected in the northern hemisphere when the weather begins to cool in the autumn.
