Tribals in Lahaul-Spiti celebrate Halda fair
by Prem Thakur

Lahaul Spiti (Himachal Pradesh): Himachal Pradesh's tribal district Lahaul-Spiti celebrated its annual Halda fair with traditional rituals recently. During the traditional fair, the family head, a male, brings out a torch from his house. Later, all the males of the area or village meet at the outskirt of the village at a fixed venue for the celebration. A fire is set to the collected woods for the celebration. Halda is celebrated after Makar Sankranti, a festival of Hindus. It is believed that Halda fair brings prosperity, peace and harmony in the society and also keeps away evil forces from humanity. Shiskar Apa, the goddess of wealth is worshipped on this occasion, and the dancing continues for a couple of days. Local residents enjoy Halda by performing local 'Nati' in which women also participate. Lauhal-Spiti remains cut off from rest of the world for over six months due to heavy snowfall. Halda fair begins the festival season in the tribal Lahaul-Spiti area of the State. Himachal Pradesh is famous for its fair and festivals. Kullu Dusherra, Mandi Shivrati and others. There are so many fair and festivals that attract foreigners, as well tourists from across the country to this State, which is also described as the land of gods and goddesses.
