President's Estate turns into eco-friendly township

New Delhi: President's Estate, running into scores of acres in the heart of the national capital, is slowly turning into an eco-friendly township. The project 'Roshni' was launched after a presidential directive on July 25, 2008. The main objective of the project was to make the Rashtrapati Bhavan a model urban township that cares for the environment. It comprises 13 projects in which nine have been implemented and the rest are under various stages of completion. Three projects, construction of vermin composting pits, solid waste management and recycling of waste products were implemented with the help of self-help women groups. Christy Fernandez, Secretary to President Pratibha Patil, said that it was a win-win situation for every one. Various eco-friendly measures such as production of manure from tree leaves, rainwater harvesting system, solar panels, a bio gas plant, and a solid waste management system are part of the project. The President's Estate is trying to get an ISO certification.
