Community
mobilisation at Darjeeling Carnival Darjeeling
(West Bengal): Community mobilisation took centrestage at the 10-day
long Darjeeling Carnival, which was organised recently by the non-registered
civil group -- Darjeeling Initiative. The carnival was inaugurated by
West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi. "The motive behind the carnival
is community mobilisation to get people out of houses, to entertain themselves,
to showcase what Darjeeling has to offer to the world. This is a cosmopolitan
place. We have people of cultural background from all over the world to
showcase and give an economic boost to tourism," said Sanjay Sharma, one
of the organisers. Moreover, the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC)
along with the local administration and district authorities have offered
support to make the carnival a success. Darjeeling , the word is a composition
of 'dorje' meaning 'thunderbolt' and 'ling' meaning 'place' --'the Land
of the Thunderbolt'. Meanwhile, the British Council and the Indian Council
for Cultural Relations (ICCR) have also participated in this extravaganza.
Many cultural groups from far off place are participating in this carnival.
The 10- day carnival, which concluded earlier this week, showcased performances
of the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre of the Union Cultural Ministry portraying
the rich culture. |
