Chennai:
Doctors at Chennai's Communicable Diseases Hospital on Friday confirmed
that the city is facing a possible diarrhoea epidemic in the wake of floods
hitting the Tamil Nadu capital. Dr Krishna, a member of the medical staff
at the hospital, told mediapersons today that at least 105 people have
been admitted for treatment with symptoms of nausea and diarrhoea, but
added that this figure was much lower than the 714 cases admitted during
the months of October and November 2004. ''This is a seasonal trend,''
he said. Tests for possible cholera are being conducted. The results of
these tests, expected in a day or two, will indicate whether the authorities
have the situation under control Pulianthope is one of the worst hit localities
of the city as the stagnant water is taking a long time to drain out.
The authorities claimed that the overflowing waters of the Otteri Canal
and the consistent downpour was responsible for the floods. |
