New Delhi: The Mughal Gardens of Rashtrapati Bhawan was thrown open to the general public on Friday. It will remain open till March 13. People from all walks of life entered the gardens sharp at 10 a.m. to have a rare glimpse of the flora on show in the Indian capital's principal address. The gardens will be open to the public on all days from 10 a.m. to 4 pm except on Mondays, which has been earmarked as a maintenance day. The gardens, which have over a million seedlings, are opened to the public only for a month between February and March every year. Designed
by the architect Edward Lutyens during Governor General Lord Harding's
tenure, the Mughal Gardens boast of the finest varieties of roses in
the country besides other flowers, which are maintained with the utmost
care and thought. The gardens also have a network of fountains and water
ponds created in the Mughal style of gardening. The lawns of these gardens
are also used by the President to host tea parties. It is surrounded
by several artificial ponds with numerous varieties of fish. Most interesting
are the beautiful fountains illuminated with multicoloured lights. The
main attraction this year is the opening of the Spiritual Garden, which
house trees and shrubs of religious sanctity to different faiths. Also,
President A P J Kalam's personal touch and care can be seen at the Kitchen
Garden (Dali Khana), where organically grown vegetables are on view.
