Delhi: The middle and upper
reaches of the Himalayas have been receiving a spell of snowfall since
Sunday while intermittent rains swept across the Indo-Gangetic plains,
plunging the mercury. The vital 300-km Jammu-Srinagar National Highway
in restive Jammu and Kashmir state was blocked. However, tourists at
Patni Top, about 100 km away from the state's winter capital Jammu,
enjoyed the snowfall. "There is a lot of snowfall here in Patni Top
and we are enjoying very much. We are newly-married and we are having
a nice time," said Rajesh Sinha. Heavy snowfall disrupted traffic in
neighbouring Himachal Pradesh state as well but the visitors from the
plains were thrilled to see this sudden deluge. "We have come from Bombay.
We did not expect to see snowfall. We are enjoying very much," said
Suchet Kumar, a visitor from the western Bombay city. Winters in South
Asia is not as severe as in Europe but many poor people, scantily-clothed
and ill-fed, succumb to the chill. References: Snowfall
