Heavy snowfall hits tourist inflow in Manali

Snow being cleared in the Manali tourist resort.

Manali: Heavy snow and avalanche fears have hampered tourist inflow to Manali. The region has been witnessing heavy snowfall for the past two weeks, bringing the minimum temperature to -12 degrees in several areas. Situated at a height of 2310 metres above sea level, Manali has always been a favourite destination of tourists and film-makers because of its pristine beauty. The state's meteorological department issued an avalanche warning last week. Since then, most of the famous tourist spots are deserted. Hoteliers and tour operators say people are cancelling bookings made in advance. "It has hit tourism badly. People have cancelled bookings in large numbers and a lot of those who had planned for a long stay returned after two, three days only," said Anurag Prarthi, a hotel owner. The metmen said the entire Himachal Pradesh is reeling under cold wave.
