Blanket of snow covers Gangtok

Uumbrella to protect against snowfall

     Gangtok: The Sikkim state experienced its heaviest snowfall in years today as the mercury, prompted by continuous rains, plunged to 1.1 degree Celsius making it the coldest day of the season. The two hour-long snowfall was reported from the upper parts of the picturesque state, bordering China, including, Balwakhani, Tashi viewpoint, Ganeshtok and Hanumantok.

     Tourists said they enjoyed the weather. "This is the first time I have come in Sikkim and I am enjoying the snowfall. The Kanchenjunga is looking picturesque," Sanjay, a tourist, said. Dane, a tourist from Netherlands said: "It is looking very nice. We are enjoying very much. People are very good here." Constant rains have lashed Gangtok since Sunday evening, which brought the minimum temperatures hovering between 7 and 5 degrees Celsius over the past fortnight.
