All flights come to a halt in Germany as airport workers go on strike

BERLIN, Mar 10: A one-day strike by workers at German airports, including the Frankfurt and Munich, led to the cancellation of flights on Monday.

The 24-hour strike began at midnight of Sunday. At Frankfurt Airport, 1,054 of the day’s 1,116 scheduled takeoffs and landings were cancelled, dpa reported.

At Berlin airport all regular departures and arrivals were cancelled. So also affected were Hamburg, Cologne, Bonn, Munich.

The other airports affected were Bremen, Hannover, Duesseldorf, Dortmund, Leipzig/Halle, Stuttgart, Weeze, Karlsruhe and Baden-Baden.

According to the German airports’ association, ADV, more than 3,500 flights were canceled and 560,000 passengers were affected. The union had announced the strike last Friday.

The union demand covered a new pay and conditions contract for airport security workers and a dispute over pay for employees of federal and municipal governments.

Talks on the pay dispute will resume on Friday and for airport security workers on March 26.

In a post on X, Governor Radhakrishnan said, "Prof Tripathi was a distinguished Sanskrit scholar, researcher and a popular teacher. During his tenure, he worked with dedication for the promotion and propagation of the Sanskrit language. With his demise, we have lost a dedicated researcher and an able administrator who tirelessly worked for the cause of Sanskrit."
