27-year-old's miraculous escape from Air Canada's LaGuardia collision with fire truck

NEW YORK, Mar 26 (INS): In the chaos of last Sunday night’s Air Canada crash
at LaGuardia Airport, one survivor’s story has emerged as a testament to human
resilience and sheer luck. Thrown nearly 300 feet from the wreckage, 27-year-old
Daniel Harper of Toronto lived to recount an ordeal that could easily have ended
in tragedy.

Bombardier CRJ-900 regional jet's Flight AC8646, operated by Air Canada Express's
carrier Jazz Aviation LP (Jazz), coming from Montreal carrying 72 passengers
and four crew members, was on landing roll just before midnight when it collided
on the runway with a Port Authority fire truck that was responding to a previous
emergency call. The plane's entire front was torn off. The airport resumed flights
on one runway on Monday. More than 600 flights were cancelled.
The plane’s two pilots were killed in the horror, and 39 were sent to hospitals.
The pilots have been identified as Antoine Forest and Mackenzie Gunther.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, their flashing lights cutting through
the darkness. Amid the wreckage, Harper was found lying on the grass, dazed
but conscious, having been hurled clear of the fuselage.

“I don’t remember the impact,” Harper said from his hospital bed Tuesday morning.
“One moment I was bracing myself, the next I was outside, staring at the night
sky. I thought I was dreaming.” Doctors say his survival is nothing short of
miraculous. Despite the distance he was thrown, Harper sustained only a fractured
arm and several bruises. “It’s rare to see someone ejected like that and live,”
remarked Dr. Susan Lin, an ER physician at Elmhurst Hospital. “The odds were
against him.”
"Longest night of my life”
For Harper’s family, the phone call confirming his survival was a moment of
overwhelming relief. His mother, Margaret Harper, described the hours of uncertainty
as “the longest night of my life.” She added, “When I heard his voice, I cried.
I still can’t believe he’s alive.”
Other passengers were not as fortunate. At least 12 people remain hospitalized,
some in critical condition. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety
Board are examining the aircraft’s black boxes to determine whether mechanical
failure or human error played a role. Weather conditions at the time were poor,
with heavy rain and gusting winds complicating the landing.
Yet amid the tragedy, Harper’s story has become a symbol of hope. Neighbours
in his Toronto community have already begun organizing support, sending messages
of encouragement and offers of assistance. “He’s always been a fighter,” said
childhood friend Alex Nguyen. “If anyone could walk away from something like
this, it’s Daniel.”
As Harper looks ahead, he says the experience has changed his perspective.
“You realize how fragile life is,” he reflected. “I’m grateful for every breath.
I want to make the most of the time I’ve been given.”
For now, Harper’s survival stands as a reminder that even in the darkest of
nights, the human spirit can endure—and sometimes, against all odds, triumph.
Another survivor, 22-year-old passenger Jack Cabo, said "There was an incredibly
loud bang. It was a really, really hard landing.” “I saw blood everywhere,”
he said.
The evacuation of passengers in the front took two hours. "One person used
a mask to wipe blood off another person’s face,” Cabo said.
Meanwhile, Quebec province's s legislature passed a resolution asking the president
and CEO of Air Canada, Michael Rousseau, to step down for his insensitive speech
of condolence in English only and not giving due trespect to the local language
by not speaking in French.
He had earlier apologized for his inability to express himself in French but
the politicians rejected his plea and passed the unanimous resolution.
Air Canada, the largest airline, is headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, where
French is the primary language—80% are French-speaking.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that Canada is a bilingual country
with two official languages.
The incident has triggered a debate on social media whether the officer refused to take orders from a party leader or he was accused of any corruption, some netizens justifying the handling in either case, that Ratnakar was blocking public welfare work! It is true the Govt machinery has been the enemy Number One of the people of this country, existing for itself and for these politicians, for well over seven decades. Many of the victims were charred beyond recognition, making identification difficult. Three hundred nineteen body parts have been sent for DNA matching with relatives to determine the identities.

The terminations are part of a large-scale exercise going on all across Fed departments and organisations to reduce wasteful Government expenditure as decided by a Trump in a mess gone berserk, and improve administrative efficiency following the whims of billionaire and his associate Elon MusK and his DOGE.
