NEW DELHI, Nov 6: Brazilian 'model' Larissa Nery has expressed shock at the report that her photo was used on voter IDs in Haryana. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had made the disclosure to corroborate his allegations of voter fraud in the State elections last year.

During a press conference titled the “H Files” on Wednesday, the Congress leader had alleged that the same photograph of a woman—later identified as Nery—was used across 22 voter ID cards under different names such as Sweety, Seema and Saraswati, all registered in 10 different polling booths in the State.

Rahul Gandhi used this example to underscore what he described as “vote chori” (vote theft) and accused the ruling BJP of manipulating the electoral process. He claimed the image had been uploaded from a central server, suggesting a systemic breach rather than isolated error. “This is not a mistake. This is a plan,” he said, calling it a “theft of democracy” and demanding accountability from the Election Commission.

The story took a surreal turn when Larissa Nery herself responded to the viral controversy. In a video posted on Instagram, she said, “Guys, I’m going to tell you some gossip, you’ll laugh so hard.” She explained that she received a call from a journalist informing her that her old modeling photo—taken when she was around 18 or 20—was being circulated in Indian media. “It’s madness, craziness,” she said, adding that she had never been to India and had no idea how her image ended up in the voter database.

Nery, who now works in the wellness industry, called the situation “absurd” and said she was both amused and disturbed by the misuse of her identity. Her reaction has sparked a wave of memes and debates online, with many questioning the integrity of the voter registration system.

Rahul Gandhi said, "But she votes 22 times in Haryana, and she votes in 10 different booths in Haryana, and she has got multiple names: Seema, Sweety, Saraswati, Rashmi, Vimla. This is a centralised operation. Somebody fed this lady into the electoral list at a centralised level, not at the booth level. I am questioning the Election Commission and the democratic process in India."

Larissa Nery, who is a hairdresser, said in her video, “Guys, it's too horrible! They're using my picture for elections in India, showing me as Indian. What a mess!... that's crazy! I'm famous in India as the 'mysterious Brazilian Model'" She also clarified to reporters that she is not a model.

She had posed for the photograph years ago. The photographer, Matheus Ferrero, shared the image online and has been used by publications as a representational image.

The Election Commission has yet to issue a formal statement on the matter.

A Netizen wrote: "...what image are we creating of this country in international community? How people are ridiculing our system, our elections, our bureaucracy and how shameful it should be for the citizens of our country."

Anticlimax: Reporters on inquiry found that the voter IDs were genuine but the electoral rolls carried the wrong photos.
