Confrontation between federal authority and the States is front and centre in America’s ongoing debate over crime, justice, and democracy. Governor Pritzker warned that deploying troops without consent would amount to an “invasion” while Trump threatened federal intervention, labelling Chicago “the worst and most dangerous city in the world, by far”.

CHICAGO, Sept 2: Eight people have been killed and 50 others injured in shootings in Chicago over the Labour Day weekend from Friday night to Monday night. No suspect has been taken in custody for most cases.

Multiple people were injured in three of the 37 shootings in the country’s third-largest city. Several victims are in serious or critical condition.

A shooting temporarily shut down all inbound lanes near Independence Boulevard on the Eisenhower Expressway Tuesday morning. Police said shots were fired at a truck, injuring the driver.

The violent Labour Day weekend has reignited political tensions as President Donald Trump threatened federal intervention. He labelled Chicago “the worst and most dangerous city in the world, by far”.

The shootings, which included a drive-by incident injuring seven individuals, have drawn national attention. While Chicago has seen a decline in violent crime overall this year—with shootings down 37% and homicides dropping 32% compared to 2024—the holiday weekend’s bloodshed has reignited debate over federal involvement in local policing.

Trump took to his social media platform to criticize Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, accusing them of failing to control crime. “Pritzker better straighten it out, FAST, or we’re coming!” Trump wrote, suggesting that federal troops may be deployed to restore order.

This isn’t the first time Trump has floated the idea of federal intervention in Democratic-led cities. Earlier, he sent National Guard troops to Washington D.C. and Los Angeles following protests and rising crime rates. Now, Chicago joins a list that includes Baltimore and New York City—urban centres Trump has repeatedly targeted in his campaign rhetoric.

Governor Pritzker responds

Governor Pritzker responded firmly, calling Trump’s threats “un-American” and warning that deploying troops without consent would amount to an “invasion.” “National Guard troops, any kind of troops on the streets of an American city don’t belong, unless there is an insurrection or a true emergency. There is not,” Pritzker said during a CBS News interview.

Mayor Johnson echoed the Governor’s sentiments, leading chants of “no troops in Chicago” during a Labour Day march. He also signed an executive order barring federal officers from wearing masks or disguises while operating in the city, a move aimed at resisting unilateral federal deployments.

Despite Trump’s claims, crime data paints a more nuanced picture. While Chicago’s per capita murder rate remains high, it ranks tenth nationally—behind cities like St. Louis, Baltimore, and New Orleans, many of which are in Republican-led States.

Critics argue that Trump’s focus on Chicago is politically motivated, targeting Democratic strongholds and Black-led administrations. Civil rights groups and local activists have condemned Trump’s rhetoric, warning that federal intervention could escalate tensions and undermine community trust.

“We do not want military checkpoints or armored vehicles on our streets,” Johnson said. “We’re going to protect the humanity of every single person in the city of Chicago”.

As the city mourns the victims of the weekend’s violence, the political fallout continues to unfold.

Over Labour Day weekend last year, seven people were killed, six of them by gunfire. More than 20 others were also wounded in shootings over the holiday weekend, police said. Shooting is a common occurrence in Chicago, particularly over long holiday weekends in summer.

The CCTV footage and the video circulating on social media do not indicate any serious abnormalities in takeoff or descent, it has been confirmed. The disaster is becoming curiouser and curiouser. PROGNOSIS: It looks a Real New Trump is emerging - courageous, balanced, powerful and disinterested. Determined to save his country from the cliff, he has done quite a few draconian things that will reduce the burden of debts of the Federal entity, like the golden handshake, stopping senseless funding, pulling out of a worthless WHO. Shutting the Education Department is another. On the other hand, running it is also not the Centre's job either (We will convincingly elaborate it in the next chapter).

In India the scene is just the opposite. Centralisation is the core agenda and identity of the ruling dispensation without which it has no existence, or in other words, it exists for that set of schemes only. A realisation of this never dawned upon any Opposition party in 2014 or any time thereafter, what to talk of being able to see it coming 70 years ago! The consequence of all this violation of basic natural law of the universe we cannot predict.

THE AMERICAN CONUNDRUM: Political venom has migrated to top echelons in the US. It was reported last year NASA has become politicised, vitiated. But NASA refuted the charge. How Boeing developed a glitch but its unmanned return was smooth. When Suni-Wilmore were stranded last June, why the return was set for February? Because that comes only after January 20! Difficult times for Americans too.

The terminations are part of a large-scale exercise going on all across Fed departments and organisations to reduce wasteful Government expenditure as decided by a Trump in a mess gone berserk, and improve administrative efficiency following the whims of billionaire and his associate Elon MusK and his DOGE. It has not been shared how terminations are going to raise the efficiency bar! It looks like Trump has stolen some of the prescriptions meant for India. But the American problems are quite different.

ANALYSIS: "The standard operating procedure for deportations by aircraft used by ICE that is effective from 2012 provides for the use of restraints," says the Government. That means, it is taken for granted the US will set the standard for deportations. For another, the Government is more interested in comparing with what happened in 2012 under a different Government to justify its own compliance! No surprise, others are trampling upon us.
