National Guards arrive in Los Angeles to put down immigrant protests
As violence escalated in Los Angeles, Trump on Saturday night ordered deployment of National Guards. The immigrant protests had intensified on Saturday with demonstrators gathering in Paramount and downtown Los Angeles and Federal agents responding with tear gas and flash-bang grenades to disperse the violent crowds. The immigrants were protesting against work place raids by ICE agents.
PROGNOSIS: Political analysts say the immigration protests in Los Angeles reflect emerging deeper political and social divisions in the United States.
LOS ANGELES (California), June 8: President Donald Trump on Saturday evening
(local time) ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to restore
order in Los Angeles where immigration protests escalated the second day following
raids at work places and subsequent arrests. He claimed State and local authorities
were “unable to handle the task.”
Early morning Sunday, the National Guards arrived at the Edward R Roybal Federal
building, next to the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Los Angeles where illegal
immigrants are taken after being detained, according to latest reports. It is
stated that Trump’s decision to federalise the National Guard, which is normally
under State control, is unusual. But is legally right.
The protests had begun on Friday after Immigration and Customs Enforcement
(ICE) agents carried out city-wide immigration raids targeting undocumented
immigrants at work places like Home Depot stores and clothing manufacturer Ambient
Apparel’s headquarters and several other locations.
The Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem, said in a statement
that the ICE arrested 118 immigrants in Los Angeles. Two police deputies were
treated for injuries. US labour union leader David Huerta has also been detained.
He is the president of the California branch of the Service Employees International
Union (SEIU).
Violent confrontation
The security agents on Saturday were seen in a violent confrontation with the
protesters in the Paramount area in south-east Los Angeles.
Tear gas and flashbangs were fired at the protesters. (A flashbang or a stun
grenade or flash grenade is an explosive device. Its blinding flash light and
loud noise will disorient targeted people. It's non-lethal). Smoke filled the
air in the southern outskirts of Los Angeles.
Federal agents with 'rifles', tactical gear, and green camouflage were seen
pitted against protesters.
The protesters and police had clashed against each other on the the streets
on Friday also after the raids.
On Saturday some protestors had waved Mexican flags and set a US flag on fire
in Paramount in Los Angeles.
Border Patrol personnel in riot gear and gas masks took position in the city
of Paramount as protesters gathered.
As the standoff by protesters and law enforcement continued, Trump said on
his Truth Social platform, “If Governor Gavin Newscum (Newsom), of California,
and Mayor Karen Bass, of Los Angeles, can't do their jobs, which everyone knows
they can't, then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem,
RIOTS & LOOTERS, the way it should be solved!!!”
Newsom: 'Inflammatory'
Governor Newsom called the deployment of troops “purposefully inflammatory”
and said it would only escalate tensions.
When US Defense Secretary Hegseth said threatened if violence continues in
Los Angeles, Marines will be sent to Los Angeles and troops will also be mobilised.
But Newsom responded, saying that is his “deranged behavior.” Marines at Camp
in San Diego County were on “high alert,”Hegseth said, but it is said marines
are not for deployment against Americans.
Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary posted: “A message to the LA rioters:
you will not stop us or slow us down. @ICEgov will continue to enforce the law.
And if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will be prosecuted to
the fullest extent of the law.”
However, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) clarified that it would not
participate in mass deportations or attempt to determine individuals’ immigration
status. This stance has further highlighted the divide between local and federal
authorities on immigration enforcement.
Protesters in small groups continued to gather in downtown Los Angeles late
into Saturday night.
As protesters blocked tracks, the trains in the region were cancelled late
in the night.
The ICE has been arresting and deporting undocumented migrants across the country
as part of Trump’s immigration policy.
Political analysts say the immigration protests in Los Angeles reflect emerging
deeper political and social divisions in the United States.
The CCTV footage and the video circulating on social media do not indicate any serious abnormalities in takeoff or descent, it has been confirmed. The disaster is becoming curiouser and curiouser. PROGNOSIS: It looks a Real New Trump is emerging - courageous, balanced, powerful and disinterested. Determined to save his country from the cliff, he has done quite a few draconian things that will reduce the burden of debts of the Federal entity, like the golden handshake, stopping senseless funding, pulling out of a worthless WHO. Shutting the Education Department is another. On the other hand, running it is also not the Centre's job either (We will convincingly elaborate it in the next chapter).
In India the scene is just the opposite. Centralisation is the core agenda and identity of the ruling dispensation without which it has no existence, or in other words, it exists for that set of schemes only. A realisation of this never dawned upon any Opposition party in 2014 or any time thereafter, what to talk of being able to see it coming 70 years ago! The consequence of all this violation of basic natural law of the universe we cannot predict.
THE AMERICAN CONUNDRUM: Political venom has migrated to top echelons in the US. It was reported last year NASA has become politicised, vitiated. But NASA refuted the charge. How Boeing developed a glitch but its unmanned return was smooth. When Suni-Wilmore were stranded last June, why the return was set for February? Because that comes only after January 20! SpaceX called the shots, for itself and for Trump. Then the mission was manipulated for March for a better bargain! In between, what made Elon Musk 'predict' during campaign if Kamala Harris wins he would be in jail. In politics, it is said, "the only rule is there are no rules." Difficult times for Americans too.
The terminations are part of a large-scale exercise going on all across Fed departments and organisations to reduce wasteful Government expenditure as decided by a Trump in a mess gone berserk, and improve administrative efficiency following the whims of billionaire and his associate Elon MusK and his DOGE. It has not been shared how terminations are going to raise the efficiency bar! It looks like Trump has stolen some of the prescriptions meant for India. But the American problems are quite different.

ANALYSIS: "The standard operating procedure for deportations by aircraft used by ICE that is effective from 2012 provides for the use of restraints," says the Government. That means, it is taken for granted the US will set the standard for deportations. For another, the Government is more interested in comparing with what happened in 2012 under a different Government to justify its own compliance! No surprise, others are trampling upon us. (How we conduct ourselves inside decides, inherently, how we are treated outside) Thirdly, the Government blamed the gangs doing the business of human trafficking for the illegal migration. For all the crimes taking place in the country, let us blame the criminals! Funny! We will never move an inch forward! The mindset defines what we are.
Meanwhile, a UN-returned Congress leader Shashi Tharoor sounded like a layman when he said, "If they are citizens of India we have an obligation to take them back." Who said 'No'?. He should know that is not the issue now. Who will identify an undocumented person, and how?
OPINION: A nutty 'new' Trump must know checking illegal immigration is his job and not theirs. And 'penalty' tariff is not a solution. However, Trump talking about "major threat" from "illegal aliens" (illegal immigration) is about what he believes, right or wrong, and to that extent he is genuine and honest; it is certainly not a pretension to prop up his political relevance. Bullies are always true to themselves. Look at India's crooked politicians shouting day in, day out to prove they are more patriotic, and to whip up public sentiments for them to ride on!
