Varanasi toys face competition

A toy maker with his toys in Varanasi city in Uttar Pradesh. Varanasi, which is known for its wooden toys since ages, is facing stiff competition from Chinese toys these days. Moreover with forest wood being banned for making such toys, these artisans are demanding an alternative form of employment from the government.

Varanasi: Toy makers in Varanasi are very excited that their toys have been chosen for display during the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi. Kashi has been known for its wooden toys since ages. The description of the same can be found in history which states that toys of Lord Rama came from Kashi. "A special kind of wood is used to make these toys. There is a lot of demand for these toys in abroad because the colour filled in these toys are hygenic, even if a child puts it in mouth there is no harm. It is the first time that tat ministry has asked to demonstrate these toys in parade. Its a good way of publicity. Such kind of exhibition should be done. The major problem is the non- availability of wood that is used in making these toys. Government has banned this wood whereas it is forest wood and used maily for burning and making toys", said Kartikey, a toy expoter in Varanasi.

In recent times Chinese toys have dominated the local toy market of Varanasi which is deteriorating the local business. This was not just enough, these markets have to also bear the government policy which are not in favor of them. "Because of China, toys made in India by woods, metals and other things are affected. As plastic was used by China due to which wooden toys are affected. All the things made by China are by plastic and it has affected everything", said Parameshwar Singh, toy manufacturer. It is said that 'every black cloud has a silver lining' and this proved to be true with the toy makers in Varanasi. After a long interval, the toy business in Varanasi has a new ray of hope. On Republic Day toys made in Varanasi will also be included in the tableau.

"If government dosen't help us then it seems that within eight to ten years the toy business will have a set back. Exhibition which is being held on January 26 we are hopeful that people comming from India and abroad will see our toys. The demand will surely increase and the toy market will also progress", said Yogendra Singh, toy expoter in Varanasi. When orders were given to display these toys in Republic Day parade, the toy industries of Varanasi which were on the verge of extinction gained a new hope that again local toy market will flourish and business will be back on track.
