Dr. Inderjit Kaur serving Amritsar 's mentally challenged

Amritsar: At a time when many medical practitioners would do anything to work overseas, Dr. Inderjit Kaur of Amritsar has opted to devote her talent at Pingalwara, an institution for the underprivileged and mentally retarded patients. Today, Dr. Kaur heads Pingalwara which houses 1,200 inmates. "I derived the inspiration to serve from my parents. My father, a doctor-cum-social worker, wanted me to serve mankind. He taught me dignity of labour and the need to help animals to get healthy food. He (father) wanted me to be soaked in true service," said Dr. Inderjit Kaur, President of the All India Pingalwara Charitable Society, Amritsar "When my father ((Dr. Harbans Singh) died in 1975, my brothers and sisters were still adolescents. I had one married sister but the responsibility of all others had fallen upon me. But I always loved my profession and liked treating patients at Pingalwara," said Bhagat Puran Singh, the founder of Pingalwara. "To earn money has never been the aim of my life. I earned money to fulfill my responsibilities, getting my brothers and sisters settled. I assume another responsibility at Pingalwara - This is my world, my brothers and sisters, said Singh. "Pingalwara is the house of God. The family belongs to god, and no one can claim of having a person of his choice in charge. The inmates are my brothers and sisters and to fulfill their necessities is the aim of my life," said Dr. Inderjit kaur. "An ordinary man cannot imagine their pain. Even their parents look upon them as a burden. They should think positive, as maybe god has given them such a child to grasp fully the meaning of `service'. Many families, who have mentally-retarded children, understand their problems," said Kaur added. Kaur says, all children may not be role models, but some of them can surely be ambassadors of Pingalwara to spread message of love in others' world. They will speak about world peace. Pingalwara doesn't mean receiving donations. Its founder Bhagat Puran Singh gave the message of peace and love. In today's world, there's a need to have many Bhagat Puran Singhs.
