King Seeks Shankaracharya's Blessings
NEW
DELHI: Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah had his first
meeting, as the king of Nepal, with the Sankaracharya
of Kanchi peeth, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, who has
been camping in Delhi for the past few days, on June
26.
Gyanendra was accompanied by queen Komal Rajya Lakshmi
and their daughter. The Shankaracharya supervised
a 'puja' (ritual worship), the king and the queen
performed in line with the Hindu kingdom's royal traditions.

For centuries, the kings have revered the Shankaracharyas
as their 'guru' (preceptor). The present Shankaracharya
visited Nepal several times during the rule of the
late king Birendra, brother of Gyanendra.
After a closed-door meeting with the king following
the puja, the Shankaracharya spoke of the cultural
identity between the two neighbours - India and Pakistan.
