Christ's
Followers Give Way to Holi Revellers
NEW
DELHI: On Good Friday, the day of crucifixion
of Jesus Christ, Christians fast and attend Mass in
the church. The cross, a symbol of condemnation and
death, became a sign of salvation and freedom from
fear of death for mankind on Easter three days later,
the day of Resurrection, when Jesus was seen alive,
which is celebrated as a day of deliverance.
Christians of India join the rest of the world in
observing the day in a solemn manner. Beautifully
painted eggs are sold in the market.
In a happy coincidence, March 29 brought together
the Indian festival of colours, Holi, and Good Friday
on the same day. And both Hindus and Christians celebrated
in their own way. People of different faiths also
participated in the celebrations later held at churches,
where holy Easter services began with the ringing
of the bells.
However, to avoid unpleasant incidents on the streets
involving Holi revellers many of whom indulge in hooliganism
in the morning hours, Christians at many places in
the country deferred their Mass at church to afternoon/evening
from the traditional 9'clock.
Some churches, on the other hand, made special arrangements
to transport the faithful to the Mass at the appointed
hour in the morning itself.
No complaints of harassments, however, were reported
on the day.
