All Souls' Day observed in Delhi New Delhi: All Souls' Day was observed on Sunday in the Capital. All Souls' Day is a Roman Catholic day commemorating the faithful departed or those baptized Christians believed to be in purgatory. It is celebrated on November 2. William Paul, a visitor to a graveyard, said that this day is significant as one remembers those near and dear ones who have died. "We remember all the departed souls from our families, friends, we offer the prayer to get them place in heaven and then for the goodbeing so this is very important, a day for all of us...we do not forget those who have left us forever," he said. People visit the graveyard with flowers and candles to put on the graves of the departed souls from their families and friends. Amit, another visitor to the graveyard, said they set aside this day especially to remember their departed loved ones. "People from all walks of life, somebody's mother, father, niece, nephew all get together on this day.. all of us, since many years people have been coming. Sundays are there but this day is different...today people, no matter how busy they are, take out time and come," he said. All
Souls' Day was established by Odilo, abbot of Clunny, in the eleventh
century. The day purposely follows All Saints' Day in order to shift
the focus from those in heaven to those in purgatory. On this day, three
requiem masses are celebrated: one for the celebrant, one for the departed,
and one for the pope. The Church of England abolished All Souls' Day
during the Reformation. However, the day has been reestablished in Anglo-
Catholic churches. All Souls' Day has ancient roots in Judeo-Christian
tradition. More than two centuries before the birth of Christ, Jews
had developed the custom of praying for the dead. |
