Fishermen conduct prayers to appease sea god

Fisherfolk in Kochi worshipping the sea for a better life once again, after the community lost everything in the tsunami waves.

Kochi: The tsunami, which hit the coastal regions, has left a deep impact on the minds of the fishermen. To overcome the fear and to start a better life once again, the coastal villagers conducted sea pooja in Kochi. Hundreds of fishermen and their family members took part in this ritual, which was conducted on the sea shore, by entering and taking a dip in the sea.

The ritual was conducted to make the sea god happy for giving them a good catch whenever they enter the sea and also for the betterment of the fishermen and their families who lost everything in the tsunami disaster. "After that day, we were not able to go to the sea till today and there is not enough fish in the sea too, if we get some catch it is not fetching us the required price either. Now we are conducting this ritual to make the sea god happy and to have abundance in sea fishes and also for the betterment and development of coastal regions and even the fishermen", said Falgunan, a villager. By conducting this kind of a pooja, the fishermen believe and are hopeful that the tsunami disaster will not occur again.
