1,74,542 saplings in Nagapattinam to prevent tsunami

Pushpavanam (Tamil Nadu): In an unique display of solidarity and deep concern, the residents of a small village in Nagapattinam district, the worst tsunami affected place in India, planted more than 170,000 saplings in just one day along the coastline to act as a bio-shield against future tsunamis. People of Pushpavanam village planted 174,542 saplings in a record time of 24 hours as a tribute to all those who lost their lives in the tsunami disaster all over the world. Around 300 volunteers began the effort at 3:30 pm (IST) local time on Saturday and finished the task by 3:30 pm (IST) on Sunday. Authorities of the Guinness Book of world records nominated three observers to monitor the initiative sponsored by Bangalore-based Wipro Limited and the alumni of the Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences (BITS). "We took up the figure of 174,542 saplings, equal to the confirmed number of people dead in tsunami 14 countries throughout the world. So, that is this effort, it is basically a bio-shield for this village, but, it has a value because it is corporate cooperation and also an overwhelming response to the tragedy," said J. Radhakrishnan, District Collector, Nagapattinam.

The previous record of planting the highest number of trees in 24 hours was 80,244 in 2002 in the neighbouring village of Naluvedapatty where only seven persons were washed away in the tsunami. The saplings of Thazhai and Casuarina varieties were planted in an area of more than 35 acres. The district administration plans to plant more than 2.5 million saplings by this December along the 187 kilometre long coast line spread over 350 acres. Nagapattinam district was the worst hit in Tamil Nadu state, which lost over 7,000 lives in the tsunami, triggered by an undersea earthquake of the magnitude 9.1on Richter scale off Indonesia's coast. Some 10,000 people were killed, 6,50,000 displaced and 2,00,000 houses damaged in the four zones -- Chennai, Cuddalore, Kanyakumari and Nagapattinam districts in Tamil Nadu.
