A legendary musical tsunami fund-raiser

Manna Dey performing in a concert in aid of tsunami victims in New Delhi

New Delhi: An Indian legendary playback singer enthralled the audience with nostalgic hits in national capital New Delhi on Friday (February 25) to raise funds for tsunami victims. The musical night was organised by a voluntary organisation. From semi-classical to classical, Manna Dey lent his voice to some of the most intricate musical compositions. The money raised out of the concert would be donated to the victims of tsunami. "It's done for a good cause. I am here to sing and people will definitely contribute to whatever is done for," said Dey. "People like us should definitely come forward and it's a good cause. Though it's just a bit that we are contributing. I think people should come forward and do whatever little they can do for the cause and country," said Shivika, a resident.

A perfectionist by nature, 85-year-old Dey has given his voice to both Hindi and regional Bengali numbers. A versatile singer, Dey has dedicated more than five decades of his life to the Indian film industry. Dey began his musical journey at a tender age of 11. The legend has to his credit a large number of songs, ranging from romantic duets to fast and happening numbers to patriotic and devotional songs. More than 16,000 people were killed across India, when the tsunami waves struck the mainland and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Indian Ocean tsunami, triggered by Richter 9.5 magnitude earthquake off Indonesia's Sumatra coast, that killed over 320,000 people from Asia to Africa, has seen donations from across the country. The Prime Minister's Relief Fund had attracted a record over 5.5 billion rupees ($125.9 million) till January and officials said it could cross 10 billion rupees by March before the tsunami fund closes.
