Tamil Nadu organizes marathon
Chennai:
The "Fourth Chennai Marathon" was kicked off on Sunday
from the city's famous Marina Beach. Girls dressed in colourful
attires cheered, with more than 8,000 people participating
in the marathon, which covered a 42- kilometre long distance.
Tamil Nadu State Sports Authority had organized the marathon
along with a voluntary organisation. Walter Devaram, vice-President,
Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDATN), said
the run would boost the morale of those aiming to make it
big in the national as well as international sports arena.
"It shows that if you give people opportunity, a lot of
people are willing to run. Out of these 10,000 people, at
least 1000 people will be 100 national champions and out
of 100, 20 will be international champions. So that is the
idea," said Devaram. The event had different categories
like the half marathon, full marathon and a special category,
run for cause, for both men and women. "We are here to cheer
the people whether they are running for tsunami or cancer
or any cause. They are running for a cause," said Anita,
a cheerleader. The winners of the marathon would be awarded
with cash money, which would also go to the victims of tsunami.
