Nagapattinam museum survives tsunami waves

Rare sculptures at the Government Museum in Nagapattinam. The 120-year-old building of the museum located near the sea narrowly escaped the wrath of tsunami.

Nagapattinam (Tamil Nadu): The 120-year-old Government Museum situated near the sea in Nagapattinam has survived the devastating tsunami waves of December 26, 2004. The museum has a rare collection of panchaloha paintings and a numismatic art gallery dating back to 12th Century B.C. The tsunami waves could not enter the museum because of its big compound wall and a strong door. Although some water had entered the museum, the damage was minimum. "This is a 120 year old building, which was constructed by the British for their own purpose. Later, we took it over and now we are using it as a museum, which has a rare collection of 29 bronze sculptures. The museum was saved by the walls and the strong doors, which did not let the water enter the building", said S. Sarvanan, the curator of the museum.
