Couple arrested over tsunami baby

Colombo: A Sri Lankan couple who say they are the parents of a tsunami "miracle baby" have been arrested for allegedly trying to snatch the child from a hospital. A court in the eastern town of Kalmunai had earlier ordered a DNA test to determine the parents of "Baby 81". According to The BBC, Murugupillai Jeyarajah and wife Junitha broke down in tears after the order was announced in a packed courtroom. Nine couples have claimed the baby although police say only the Jeyarajahs have made a formal legal claim. Police inspector Jameel Alm told the foreign news agency: "The medical superintendent of the hospital and a few other members filed a complaint that the parents tried to grab the baby. It cannot be allowed because the court has ordered the baby be kept in the custody of the hospital until the DNA tests are done." Four people were arrested in all, police said.
