PM turns 73 onboard Paris-New York flight

     New York: It was a very special birthday treat onboard his special Air India flight that brought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from Paris to New York. His wife Gursharan Kaur cut the cake on board the jumbo on Tuesday to mark his 73rd birthday. Their daughter and son and his entourage doing a round of clapping watched by their grandson.

     Madurai (Tamil Nadu): Popular south Indian film star Vijaykanth launched his own political party on Wednesday. Vijaykanth, who has acted in over a 100 films in Tamil and Telugu language, has a huge fan following. His decision to launch the National Progressive Dravida Kazhagam comes just eight months ahead of the crucial polls in Tamil Nadu, which till now, was being touted as a direct fight between incumbent chief minister Jayaram Jayalalithaa's All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazgham. "Today I formally launch a new political party named National Progressive Dravida Kazhagam. I believe in people's power. They are my real supporters. Ninety percent of the people in the state are with me and out of this 50 percent are women," he told a cheering crowd of a thousand people in Madurai city. The party's strength depends solely on Vijykanth's fans associations, which currently has more than 2.1 million members. Tamil Nadu's film industry has contributed a few big political leaders like the late M.G. Ramchandran (MGR), Jayalalithaa and DMK leader K.Karunanidhi. But in the recent past many have taken the plunge into politics and failed.

     Dimapur: Police in Nagaland have busted a Nigerian ring of internet fraudsters involved in the infamous 'Nigerian Advance Fee Scheme' " also known as '419 Scam'. Three Nigerians have been picked up from Dimapur. This arrest comes close on the heels of Delhi police arresting busting another Nigerian racquet involved in running similar fraud scheme in India. The three have been identified as Martins Ngomah, Alagie Sawaneh and Ez Ealoaku. One of the three has claimed himself to be rebel leader of an organization fighting against the Nigerian government. Police disclosed that the three posing as Nigerian UN Diplomats, were in email communications with a Dimapur-based lad who they had zeroed in to fleece money by taking him for a long ride through their tempting quick money-making scam through ingenious money laundering.

     Washington: Twenty-nine-year-old Dr. Vikram Sheel Kumar has been named as one of 2005's ten young outstanding Americans (TOYA Awards) by the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Kumar is the first Indian American to have been selected for the award. One of the oldest and most prestigious recognition programs in the world, the 67th TOYA annual awards presentation will be held on September 17 at the World Trade Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Some of the earlier recipients of this honor include Bill Clinton, John D. Rockefeller, John F. Kennedy, Henry Ford, Robert F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Elvis Presley, Henry Kissenger, Christover Reeves, David Copperfield, Al Gore, Dick Cheney, Arthur Ashe, Jessie Jackson, Ted Kennedy, Howard Hughes and William Webster. Kumar has been in news for his contributions in the field of medical technology for mass-application.

Pak women get themselves raped to turn millionaires: Musharraf (Go To Top)

     New York: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said that women in Pakistan get themselves raped for getting a visa to Canada and becoming a millionaire. "You must understand the environment in Pakistan. This has become a moneymaking concern.......a lot of people say if you want to go abroad and get a visa for Canada or citizenship and be a millionaire, get yourself raped," the Daily Times quoted Musharraf as saying in an interview with The Washington Post. He further said that Pakistan should not be seen in isolation as far as rape cases are concerned, as it happens even in the US, Canada, France and the UK also. "Pakistan should not be singled out when the curse is everywhere in the world," he said adding that reports or figures about rape in the US, Canada, France and Britain show that "it is happening everywhere". To a question about rape victim Mukhtar Mai, he said that she was free to travel now, and that he had no regrets about slapping on her to travel abroad. He said Mukhtar Mai had come "under the sway of organisations determined to harm Pakistan's image".
