The 12 Books That Changed The World revealed (Go To Top)

London: BBC stalwart Melvyn Bragg is all set to host a new TV series about the books that have shaped our lives. While The Origin of Species, The First Rule Book of the Football Association, and William Shakespeare's First Folio make it on to the series titled '12 Books That Changed The World', Austen, Charles Dickens and the Da Vinci Code have failed to feature on it. The text of William Wilberforce's historic speech to Parliament in 1789, in which he began his campaign for the abolition of slavery, is also among the 12 books, along with Mary Wollstonecraft's 18th century feminist treatise A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. The four-part series will be broadcast next April on ITV1. "When people think of things that change the world, they tend to think of extraordinary events: the assassination of leaders, the invasion of countries, the havoc wreaked by natural disasters. There is something less attention-grabbing, but just as powerful, which changes the world - books. The series aims to show that the lives we lead have been formed as often as not by a single book," the Daily Mail quoted an ITV spokesman as saying.

The 12 Books That Changed The World are: 1. Darwin - The Origin of Species (1859) 2. The First Rule Book of the Football Association (1863) 3. William Shakespeare's First Folio (1623) 4. Newton - Principia Mathematica (1687) 5. Adam Smith - The Wealth of Nations (1776) 6. William Wilberforce - Speech to the House of Commons (May 12 1789) 7. The King James Bible (1611) 8. Patent Specification for Arkwright's Spinning Machine (1769) 9. Mary Wollstonecraft - A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792) 10. Michael Faraday - Experimental Research in Electricity (1855) 11. Marie Stopes - Married Love (1918) 12. Magna Carta (1215)

Education at Hogwarts costs 1,700 pounds (Go To Top)

London: Currency experts have revealed that they have calculated the value of galleons, magic money, in JK Rowling's Harry Potter books. Travelex reckon each gold galleon is worth 5.01pounds, or 7.39 euros, making Hogwarts an expensive option. Churning out young witches and wizards for their first year at the school would cost parents about 1,700 pounds, just for the basics. That means a magic wand would be 35.08 pounds and a superior broomstick, like Harry Potter's Nimbus 2000, would set you back 1,503 pound. Saskia van Opijnen, director of Travelex, said they had based their calculations on JK Rowling's books and on interviews with the author. "This is the first time that we have dealt with a currency from another world. Magic money is a very sturdy currency that could assert itself on the international money market," Opijnen said.
