The
Pope's car goes for a heavenly bargain
London:
An old Ford Escort, in which Pope John Paul II is said to
have enjoyed a drive, has reportedly been sold for 340,000 pounds
in a US auction. Jim Rich,41, of Illinois sold the battered
1975 saloon, which has no radio, hub-caps or air-conditioning,
to a Texas-based lawyer, who plans to put the Escort into a
private museum. The dented car had many bidders but millionaire
John O'Quinn snapped up the light blue motor at the auction
after a heavenly bargain. Auctioneer Dean Kruse hoped the car
would go for #2million. "It's a piece of history. I'll be able
to touch it and feel the Pope's spirit," The Sun quoted the
new owner as saying. The car was built in Cologne, and was once
owned by John Paul who died in April. He, however, had sold
it in 1996 and had given the #84,000 proceeds to charity. But,
the vehicle still contains the Pope's carved wooden rosary beads,
a box of matches, a sweet tin and a dashboard medallion of a
saint.
