Mumbai Diwali fire cracker business dull after floods
Mumbai:
Firecracker sellers in Mumbai are complaining of slow business
ahead of the Diwali festival, blaming the floods that stunned
the city in July as one of the factors dampening the festive
spirit. The shopkeepers are complaining of a poor business ahead
of Diwali, the festival of lights. Most of them attribute the
fall in the sale of firecrackers to the floods. "People are
coming but it is less compared to the last year. Moreover, people
are afraid due to flood and this is the reason," Satish Ahuja,
a shopkeeper. The shopkeepers are disappointed since they have
not been able to sell as many firecrackers as they had sold
in the previous years. "We have not sold even half of the firecrackers
this year.
Moreover,
the business is not good. What we have sold earlier at rupees
20, we are offering it at rupees 10. Even the customers bargain
to reduce the price. The reason is that after the floods, public
do not not have enough money. The children ask for something
and they buy something else," said Niyaj Bhai, another shopkeeper.
But keeping their spirit high, the Mumbaikers are purchasing
firecrackers for their children. Though they say the floods
have created financial problems, yet they do not deny that Diwali
is a festive season which comes once in a year. "We have come
to buy crackers for children. The people have faced a lot of
problems due to rains. We have done a little shopping but we
have to celebrate Diwali," said Rajesh, a customer. In spite
of such a slow pace in the sale of firecrackers, people are
visiting the shops to purchase crackers at least for their children
in Kurla Wholesale Market in the city.
