17 killed, 31 hurt in Tiruchirapalli bus accident
Tiruchirapalli:
At least 17 persons were killed and 31 injured in a bus
accident on Asur Road, about 20 km from Tiruchirappalli, on
Saturday. The accident occurred when an overloaded van collided
with a state transport corporation bus. Thirteen women and three
men died on the spot, while one woman succumbed to her injuries
at a private hospital. Eyewitnesses said that the speeding van,
which was supposed to carry16 people, was carrying 50 people,
and added that the driver lost control of the vehicle at about
6.30 a.m. The dead victims were workers of industrial unit manufacturing
auxiliaries for windmills. Top police officials and state Labour
Welfare Minister P Annavi reached the spot and was supervising
the rescue operations. Some of the injured were taken to a private
hospital and others to the Government Headquarters Hospital
here. Talking to reporters, Tiruchirapalli Range DIG Sunil Kumar
Singh said action would be taken against the industrial unit,
which hired the workers. He said the lorry was overcrowded and
the driver lost control resulting in the accident. Traffic on
the busy Tiruchirapalli-Thanjavur Highway was held up for a
couple of hours after the accident. Thuvakudi police have registered
a case and are investigating the cause behind the mishap.
