100 killed in Andhra train accident in Nalgonda

     Hyderabad: At least 100 people were killed in a train accident when the Repalli-Secunderabad passenger train derailed and five of its bogies including engine fell into a river in Andhra Pradesh's Nalgonda District on Saturday. The accident occurred between Ramannapet and Valigonda railway stations at 4.30 a.m. A South Central Railway (SCR) spokesman in Hyderabad confirmed that the rescue work was still on, and did not rule out the possibility that the death toll could touch the 150 mark. He said that the railway track was submerged and damaged due to heavy rains. While some bodies are feared to have been washed away in the heavy current in the swollen local stream following flash floods from the adjoining three villages.

    Rescue operations were taken up on war-footing with the help of army, railway protection force jawans and locals. A helicopter and six boats were also pressed into the rescue operations. Relief teams with doctors from Hyderabad, Guntur and Vijayawada have reached the spot. Meanwhile, Railways have announced Rs 1 lakh as ex gratia to the family of those killed and Rs 15,000 to those injured in today's mishap. "In addition, the families of those who died can claim Rs 4 lakh from Railway Claims Tribunal," said Junior railway minister R Velu, who Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy and the state's Home Minister Jana Reddy also visited the accident site to assess the situation rescue and relief operations there. In Patna, Bihar, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav said that his junion minister R.Velu has been sent to review the situation.

    Elsewhere in the storm-ravaged state, 35 people have died in incidents of house collapses, drowning and electrocutions in Nellore, Chittoor and Prakasham districts. Nearly 150 people, including 55 fishermen, were missing as swollen streamsswept away several cars, autorickshaws and a bus in the affected districts. The storm has been triggered by a depression over the Bay of Bengal, according to weather officials. Power supply in six Andhra districts, including Kadapa has been cut.
