Non-bailable arrest warrant against Medha Patekar
New
Delhi: A Delhi court has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant
against the environmental activist and leader of the NGO 'Narmada
Bachao Andolan'(NBA), Medha Patekar in connection with a defamation
case. V K Saxena, president of Ahmedabad-based National Council
for Civil Liberties involved in the areas of water security
and consumer protection, had filed a complaint against Patkar
in January 2001, against Medha for allegedly issuing a press-note
containing innuendoes against him. According to the complaint,

who is a staunch supporter of the Sardar Sarovar Dam project,
had donated 40,000 rupees to NBA by way of a cheque which was
dishonoured by the bank." "Issuing the warrant to be executed
on or before February 14, 2006, Metropolitan Magistrate G P
Singh observed that neither Patkar nor her counsel were present
at today's hearing," said Saxena's counsel Ajay Malviya "Saxena,
had filed the defamation case in January 2001 in Ahmedabad,
and it was later transferred to a Delhi court on Patkar's request,
but she has made just one appearance in the matter since its
transfer," Malviya said.
