$25 m Indian aid for Pakistan quake relief
New
Delhi: India on Thursday announced an aid of Rs 112.5 crore
(25 million dollars) for relief and rehabilitating operations
in quake-hit Pakistan Kashmir. Minister of State for Statistics
and Programme Implementation Oscar Fernandes made this announcement
at a meeting of the UN Office of the Coordinator for Humanitarian
Affairs in Geneva. Briefing the media about the offer, External
Affairs Ministry Spokesman Navtej Sarna said: "The Government
of Pakistan would be welcome to use this contribution for rebuilding
homes and rehabilitating people, reconstructing the infrastructure
and restoring essential services. Sarna further said that Pakistan
was welcome to procure supplies of building material such as
cement, steel and other items from India, and if asked, Indian
technology for pre-fabricated earthquake resistant shelters
would also be made available to Pakistan. The decision is being
considered as highly important as it came two days ahead of
the official-level meeting between the two countries to discuss
opening of Line of Control (LoC) for relief coordination. India
has, so far, sent three consignments of relief material for
earthquake victims in Pakistan. The first consignment of the
relief material (25 tonnes) was sent through an Indian Air Force
IL-76 MD transport plane on October 10, which included medicines,
tents and blankets, and then on October 13, the second consignment
of 82 tons of relief materials was dispatched via the rail route.
The third consignment of 182 tonnes was flagged off on October
16, which included 100 tonnes of fortified biscuits, 10 tonnes
of medicines, 9.5 tonnes of plastic sheets, 250 tents and 26
tonnes of blankets.
