Tehri
turns town into a watery grave
Tehri:
Tehri is finally getting submerged under the rising waters
of the Bhagirathi. Following a Uttaranchal High Court directive
allowing closure of the Tehri Dam's last tunnel, the town
has turned into a lake. There had been quite a rush of people
from far and wide to catch a last glimpse of Tehri before
it turned into a large reservoir. But as the ancient town
sinks beneath rising water levels, residents can only stand
by and watch their hometown disappear from the face of earth.
People who left the town years ago, however, still are attached
to it. Prior to India's independence, Tehri was the capital
of the princely state of Tehri-Garhwal. Maharaja Sudarshan
Shah founded the town in 1803.
