ML Khurana superannuates from electoral politics
New
Delhi: Three months after being sidelined by the top brass
of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), senior leader and former
Chief Minister of Delhi, Madan Lal Khurana announced on Friday
that he was quitting electoral politics for good. Addressing
the media in the capital, Khurana, who has been at the centre
of dissension within the BJP in the wake of party president
L.K.Advani's controversial private visit to Pakistan, also rubbished
reports of using a new front to make a fresh political foray.
"I will not, will not, will not fight MP or MLA elections. I
do not have a eye on the Chief Minister's post," Khurana, who
was sacked from the party in August for his outbursts against
Advani and readmitted later, said . "Please do not link the
creation of this non-political front with politics," the former
Rajasthan Governor said during the launch of a Poorvanchal Kranti
Sangh set up for addressing issues facing migrants from the
eastern parts of the country. The Sangh he backed, however,
is headed by former cricketer Kirti Azad, another disgruntled
member of the BJP. Actor-turned- politician Shatrughan Sinha,
who is upset with the BJP for quite sometime, also attended
the launch ceremony, describing himself as an activist of the
Sangh.
Khurana,
who had a larger than life presence in Delhi politics for close
to five decades, had been expelled from the BJP for six years
by Advani on the recommendation of the party's Disciplinary
Committee on September 7 this year. He was then accused of "gross
indiscipline and criticising the party leadership openly" under
Article 25 of the Party Constitution. The top brass of the party
was particularly peeved over his action of going to media without
raising his views in a party forum. The Committee, chaired by
former Minister Ram Naik, had yesterday recommended Khurana's
expulsion after he failed to reply to the showcause notice issued
to him on August 29, nine days after he was suspended from the
party after he repeatedly expressed his inability to work under
Advani, sought Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's removal
and demanded an apology from the party for the post-Godhra riots.
He was then re-inducted into the BJP as an ordinary member towards
the end of September at the behest of former Prime Minister
Atal Behari Vajpayee after he had apologised in writing to Advani.
Since then, however, he had receded into the background.
