EC rejects UPA allegations against K J Rao

New Delhi: The Election Commission today rejected the allegations made by RJD-led UPA in Bihar against its representative KJ Rao as totally unwarranted, reckless and baseless. The three-member body expressed its full faith in Rao's integrity, impartiality and unbiased approach towards all sections of society in discharge of the functions entrusted to him. "Having considered carefully all the facts and circumstances, the Commission is of the unanimous view that Rao did not make any remarks against any particular community or hurting their sentiments in any manner," the Commission said. It also rejected the coalition's demand for re-elections in polling stations of 46, 47 and 50 of the Bhagalpur assembly constituency.

On November 2, a UPA delegation consisting of senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh and Union Minister Prem Chand Gupta of RJD and AICC Secretary Ranjit Thomas met the EC, and alleged that Rao's order to register a first information report (FIR) against Bihar Congress chief Sadanand Singh for the violation of model code of conduct amounted to the official using extra- constitutional authority. Digvijay Singh alleged that during an inspection of Bhagalpur and Nath Nagar areas Rao had said that the area was a "Pakistani Mohalla". On Thursday, BJP criticised RJD's campaign against Rao, saying that thr Party was frustrated by the EC's determination to keep the criminal elements away from all polling booths, and that's why it was engaging in personal attack on Rao. Janata Dal (U) and Communist Party of India - ML had also blasted the RJD and Congress for launching an incessant attack on the EC official, calling it a sign of desperation in the face of a certain defeat. Two rounds of the four-phased Bihar elections are over and voting in the remaining constituencies will be held on November 13 and 19.
